What it’s like to work with Paul

People who work with Paul are struck by his genuine compassion and his warm, inviting presence. While he is a gentle and kind soul by nature, Paul’s clients also appreciate his strength and the depth of his knowledge and insight about relationships, life’s complexities, and the human condition. Paul’s clients feel understood on a deep level, and appreciate how he helps them get to the root and the “why” of their experience. This deep knowledge empowers his clients to pursue lasting change and live meaningful, fulfilling lives.

Who I work best with

In more than twenty-five years of this work, the clients I’ve been most able to help share one thing in common: genuine curiosity about themselves—not just about what needs to be different around them.

Working with me tends to be a good fit if you:

  • Are willing to look honestly at your own patterns, not just the people or circumstances around you
  • Can take ownership of your contributions to the dynamics in your relationships
  • Are willing to be part of the solution—actively engaged in your own change, not just present for it
  • Want to understand what’s driving your struggles, not just manage the symptoms
  • Are tired of repeating the same cycles and ready to do something different
  • Understand that meaningful change takes time and real engagement

Working with me is probably not the right fit if you:

  • Are looking for a quick fix or tools to manage the people around you
  • Aren’t ready to examine your own role in the patterns you’re experiencing
  • Are primarily seeking validation that others are to blame—without genuine curiosity about your own contributions
  • Expect your partner or the therapist to do all the heavy lifting. Even the most skilled therapist can’t compensate for your own absence from the process of change.

The most meaningful therapy I do happens in real partnership—when you bring honesty, ownership, and a genuine willingness to change, I can bring everything I have to support real, lasting growth.

A Note From Paul

“I wholeheartedly believe that joy comes through doing the work to heal, transform, and achieve our unique potential. Without a doubt, good relationships empower this change and give us the freedom to be our authentic selves. I love to support this with both my employees and my clients.

“There’s nothing better than seeing people come into their own—to see them find compassionate clarity about who they are and the courage to move toward their aspirations. Each of us has only one precious life—and it’s never too late to pause and reconsider what is truly essential.

Even after more than 25 years as a therapist, I’m still moved by the power of relationships to help us all heal and grow. It’s also amazing to see so many couples transform their relationship into a haven of safety, true companionship, and solidarity.

“At this point in my career, my greatest fulfillment comes from nurturing and supporting the most amazing team of counselors. Without exception, they are caring to the core and committed to growth, excellence, and authenticity. I love the culture of strength, compassion, and mutual support that we’re continually creating together.”

Outside of Counseling

Outside of directing the counseling center and providing therapy, Paul loves spending time with his family and friends, reading voraciously (literary fiction, speculative fiction, and anthropology), and spending time in nature. Paul also loves to create beautiful things, and he spends an unreasonable amount of time watching woodworking videos on YouTube to prepare for his next furniture-building project. He’s been joyfully married for over twenty years, and has two teenage sons. Although Paul loves being a fourth generation Coloradan, he also enjoys traveling and learning about other cultures.

Paul Sigafus’ Training

Paul has degrees in both Marriage & Family Therapy and Marriage, Family, & Human Development and has been practicing as a therapist for over 25 years. In addition, he is a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist & Supervisor (one of the first therapists in Colorado to earn this distinction) and helps train other therapists who are learning this highly effective approach to therapy with couples and individuals.

In his work with individuals, Paul uses his training in AEDP counseling; an approach that focuses on helping people tap into their natural qualities of resilience, strength, compassion, and authenticity.
